Websites can be a good source of information, but only if they are managed by reputable sources. The websites listed below are the official sites of respected organizations — this ensures that information provided on each is trustworthy. Also, many websites provide bibliographies at the end of articles that can provide additional links to related, vetted materials.

History Channel: Civil Rights Movement: This synopsis of the Civil Rights Movement is provided by the History Channel and features a brief explanation of the major events leading up to, during, and after the Civil Rights Movement. Listed under “More to Explore” are a variety of links that provide access to more information about themes, events, people, and topics related to the Civil Rights Movements.

Library of Congress: Civil Rights Resource Guide: Compiled by the Library of Congress, this guide organizes numerous resources from the library. The links on the right side of the page under the image of the March on Washington provides access to diverse sources ranging from the Abraham Lincoln Papers, to a timeline of related events, to records detailing the interactions of slaves and U.S. courts.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Center: The King Center for Nonviolent Social Change provides a wonderful digital archive of documents associated with King. This incredible source provides a rich, factual context for King’s life by presenting papers both written by and written to King. The archive is easy to navigate, with clickable images in the “Archive” menu that allow for a fuller understanding of his life and times.

The Nobel Peace Prize of 1964: Martin Luther King Jr.: The official website of the Nobel Prize, this site provides information on King, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, including the transcription of his acceptance speech, a list of other resources on King, and photos of the occasion. Although this site is not conducive to searching, all relevant links are easily accessible in the menu on the left-hand side.
